An AECB member and enthusiastic supporter of sustainability in construction, Beco Products has always promoted high performance building fabric as the economic, low maintenance route to better buildings.
Recent award-winner Lower Cottage Farm is testament to this with sustainability a key feature of the specification. High levels of energy efficiency in the building fabric complemented by ground source heating and heat recovery, and a borehole water supply reduce both the environmental footprint and running costs.
A “fabric first” approach specifying solid construction with Wallform ICF for the external walls, along with concrete floors, high levels of thermal insulation and thermal mass result in a more even temperature throughout the home. The comfort is further enhanced by the spacious impact created by the layouts of the living rooms.
The dramatic design incorporates local and traditional materials to reflect the previous derelict farm buildings. The three elements are apparent, the cottage and barn being connected by the glazed link which is timber clad, reminiscent of the old open barn.
The success of the end result is to everyone’s credit and a fitting celebration of 25 years of Passivhaus and low energy building.
